Ed Smith, alphr
Smith’s piece is a great one, and one both a) I never expected to see and b) we need far more of about the industry. The way games toy with history, cultural and sociological trends is an interesting one. At times, it feels like video game developers are less aware of how a game exists as part of the larger conversation about certain issues. Smith writes about how in GTA: San Andreas the rewriting of the LA riots is problematic. It distorts the truth, which could potentially damage someone’s understanding of one of the most shameful events in recent US history.

Richard Li, Gamespot
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the tutorial in Street Fighter V is not at all helpful. Capcom has been doing a great job making guides and other resources for the community, but more tips are never a bad thing! Li runs down nine things to think about while playing SFV that aren’t as simple as what buttons to press when.

Alex Osborn, IGN
I don’t want to imagine a present, or future, of gaming without the Xbox Live Arcade. I write without hesitation that it indelibly shaped the gaming landscape. It changed what we think of as games released for general consumption, and it certainly contributed to the growth and prominence of the indie game scene. I love reading stories like this, and I think you will too.

Thomas Bidaux, Gamasutra
We talk a lot about Kickstarter on The Impact Factor podcast. Is it a net good, despite the many horror stories that come out of the service? Thankfully, we have Thomas Bidaux to answer that question. Bidaux runs down the entirety of 2015 Kickstarter games: the successes, the failures, and trends for the future. Essential reading for those interested in where game development is now, and where it is going.

News & Views
11/7/15-11/13/15

Whew! Today is a doozy. Been running around frantically all day as I prepare for an enormous series of experiments next week. I’m going to be running about 4 to 5 experiments simultaneously. It’s going to be fun? (Not really, please someone save me from myself) So without further ado let’s get into this week’s News & Views.

News & Views is your weekly compilation of the best video game writing from the past week. In this edition, I’ve found great stories about how the TPP may affect video games, the important of remembering reality, how Fallout 4 is unapologetically hardcore, and how Cibele portrays an era of internet lovers.

And of course you can check out the brand new episode of The Impact Factor podcast that was posted today! You can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, or if you prefer other methods, check out our SoundCloud. We’re on YouTube too!

Richard Lai, engadget
Lai reports on the infamous and much-debated hybrid console: the Nintendo PlayStation. It turns out that not only are the rumors true, but the prototype actually works. Incredible. I love stories like this. We get the evolution of myth to truth, and a view into a present (or future) that easily could have been.

Ben Kuchera, Polygon
I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve died a couple times in Fallout 4 already. The game will kill you with barely a moment’s notice. You have to manage health and radiation and encumbrance and stats and perks and ammo and and and. Fallout 4 is a western RPG that feels true to its ancestry, for better and worse. I’m glad Bethesda did not feel compelled to water down their hardcore experience for the sake of a wider audience—and as we can already see (with the game shipping 12 million copies in one day), their decision paid off.

Leigh Alexander, Offworld
Cibele is a game that spoke to me in unexpected ways. Nina Freeman and her team at Star Maid Games have a real winner on their hands. The game covers a wealth of concepts with finesse. One that struck both me and Alexander was the game’s representation of the age of internet lovers. Though I didn’t participate, I was a part of that era. Everyone knew someone who had that anonymous internet connection turned not so anonymous. The representation of an MMO-romance in Cibele is fantastic, and I recommend everyone give it a chance.

Matt Paprocki, Unwinnable
I always knew Batman was a jerk. He’s the dictator of Gotham. The villains never stood a chance.

News & Views
8/29/15-9/4/15

Hey everyone! It’s been a fun week for The Impact Factor. First and foremost, I’m trying to stream more. Gaming has always been a pretty insular experience for me, so it’s still so strange to be broadcasting my thoughts and gameplay on Twitch. But I think I like it? All stream archives will be posted here on the blog! You can watch live (and I would LOVE if you did) at Twitch.tv/megalodonphd.

As always, News & Views compiles the best written pieces about video games from around the web each week. I know I write this a lot, but I found a ton of good stuff this week. From how R. Mika is a force for women in games, to how we are all Mario, and to how gamification is the new nihilism, you can find a bit of everything below. Let me know your thoughts!

And of course you can check out the brand new episode of The Impact Factor podcast that was podcasted today! You can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, or if you prefer other methods, check out our SoundCloud. We’re on YouTube too!

Pietro Polsinelli, Gamasutra
This is an issue that comes up all the time for me, not just for smartphone games (the main culprits) but also with larger console games. It felt hard to put into words exactly why playing 90 hours of Bloodborne felt worth my time but 10 minutes with Fallout Shelter felt like a waste. According to Polsinelli it comes down to three things: if a game tell you a story, progressively trains you, or links to your social life in some way the time feels worthwhile. Interesting. I don’t disagree, but wonder if there are other factors that determine the gradation of the worthwhileà time wasted spectrum.

Marty Sliva, IGN
Ah, Final Fantasy XV. A game that’s been off and on my mind for the past, what, 8 years? Crazy. Square Enix has been incredibly honest with their development process in the past year or so, and it’s so refreshing to finally feel like we’re getting even a little bit closer to the game’s release. Here’s looking at you, 2016.

Patrick Klepek, Kotaku
Not specifically games related, but I had to include it. I was stunned to learn of Wes Craven’s passing earlier this week. Patrick Klepek, a games writer I deeply respect and who shares my passion for horror films, posted a great reaction and reflection of Craven’s legacy. Rest in peace.

Josh Bycer, Gamasutra
Blizzard’s cross game marketing strategy is hugely significant. It was the leading factor in getting me to try out Heroes of the Storm. I did it all for a stupid card back in Hearthstone. Josh Bycer writes what I’m trying to say far more eloquently in his piece on Gamasutra. Blizzard has created a gaming dynasty, its own shared universe, that has the capacity to dig its tendrils into fans deeper and more anchored than anything before it. I know they’ve got me good.
